Review: Vampires Need Not...Apply?

Vampires Need Not...Apply?
Vampires Need Not...Apply? by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I got this book from GCP via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I hear a lot of good things about the author, Mimi Jean Pamfiloff and actually looking forward to read [b:Accidentally in Love with...A God?|13549824|Accidentally in Love with...A God? (Accidentally Yours, #1)|Mimi Jean Pamfiloff|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1344001887s/13549824.jpg|18957870] when it will come out in printed book format in October 2013 (yes, I still one of those people who really prefer to read a physical book). But the opportunity comes and I have chance to read this book first, I decide to take it.

And it is a good decision. Even this is the fourth book in the series, I do not feel lost. I think I get all the good part of the continuing plot perfectly and I actually get the good deal since this book closes some of the major cliffhanger in the previous books. Since I hate the cliffhanger, I think it is easier for me to go back and read the first three books (and a novella) now. The resolution in this book is enough for me.

The first obvious thing I notice in Ms. Pamfiloff's style of writing is humor. She is pretty funny with creative characters. The heroine, Ixtab is the goddess of Suicide. Who can come up with that title (if you are not a very funny person). Due to her power, Ixtab has to be very carefully not to touch anything (human or not) accidentally otherwise she will be a cause of suicide. She makes her first love drink poison. She even kills a cat.

A Cat.

When I laugh at the scene when she search hero's room and "accidentally" touch his cat and make it jump to his death, I feel so guilty. A Cat Has Died. I love cat and consider myself a catperson. I should not laugh but I cannot help myself. I am a terrible person. But it is hilarious.

As mentioned, this is the fourth book in the series. If you begin at this book, the beginning may lost a little bit but I personally think (since I also start at this book as well) it will get better. I do not think the plot is the most important in this book (or this series). It is the characters who lead and among several past hero/heroine who parades into this story, Ixtab and her hero are still shine.

I consider this book is a black comedy (since the cat dies), which may offend some people. But for me, it is counteract with the heroine's inner goodness. Ixtap may do bad things (such as causing the death of an innocence cat) but she does not have any intention to do so. And that's why I can accept her action (and laugh along with the consequences). The only problem I have with the black comedy of this book is Cimil. I do not like her. I do not feel that her action is funny even it is intent to perceive that way. I think she would be the heroine of the next book and that is the most difficult feeling for me. After I finished reading this book, I will definitely purchase the first three book (plus a novella) but I do not know if I want to read about Cimil as a leading lady. I hate her enough as an evil supporting cast.

I would like to recommend this book to a reader who do not take anything seriously. This is a compliment because I think it is much easier to write a serious paranormal but a comedy paranormal with an interesting storyline is very hard to find. This book is one of them.
