ก่อนจะเริ่มบทสัมภาษณ์ก็ขอบอกความลับอีกอย่างของแม็กซ์เองแล้ว สำหรับคนที่ยังไม่รู้ ซึ่งคิดว่าคงจะไม่อยู่ไม่กี่คนหรอกนะคะ ชื่อแม็กซ์นี่เป็นนามแฝง เราใช้ในสมัยที่มีคนเตือนว่า บางครั้งเราก็เขียนอะไรไม่ถูกใจหลายคน ดังนั้นจึงไม่ควรใช้ชื่อจริงในการเขียนบลอก เราก็เลยเลือกชื่อนี้เพราะมันดูเท่ห์ดี แต่ความจริงแล้วเราชื่อเมย์ -- แต่ก็คงไม่เปลี่ยนสไตล์การเขียนบลอกในนามแฝงนี้หรอกนะคะ ที่ต้องอธิบายกันยาว เพราะว่าบทสัมภาษณ์กระทำโดยใช้ชื่อจริงของเราค่ะ
May: You may not know but the name "Joy" is quite famous in Thai for nick name (we have such a long long name so we always have a nick name to call for short). I think I have about 4 friends with the name "Joy". So what I would like to know if this is your real name? And if not, how you come up with such a beautiful name?
Joy: I didn’t know that! How interesting! Yes, Joy is my real middle name, and is the nickname I’ve used since I was a child. And guess what, May? My mother’s name was Mae!!
May: Could you tell me about your newest release "Immortals: The Crossing"? And how does it connect to the series?
Joy: I introduced Mac, the Celtic demigod hero of Immortals: The Crossing, in my previous Immortals book, Immortals: The Crossing. He was an extremely popular character, and many readers emailed to ask me if he would get his own book. Immortals: The Awakening was the third Immortals book to hit the USA Today bestseller list, and my publisher decided shortly after The Awakening was released to extend the series into 2008 and 2009.
I had an inkling while I was finishing up The Awakening, that if I got a chance to write Mac’s book that I would send him to Hell. Literally. Mac is half god, half Sidhe, and very powerful—at least he’s powerful as long as he stays in the human world or the Sidhe realm of Annwyn. But death magic makes him ill, and he can only stay in a death realm for a short time without becoming incapacitated. So Hell seemed to me to be the perfect place to challenge Mac!
I decided to make Mac’s heroine, the mixed breed witch Artemis Black, no stranger to death magic. During Artemis’s previous job as a psychic ops officer in the Army, she encountered many nasty demons, and practiced death magic to counteract death magic, while working to safeguard the world from destruction. She is very powerful, and knows a lot of forbidden magic, which, unfortunately, is now her only hope to get out of the predicament she finds herself in. Shortly after encountering Artemis, Mac finds himself pursuing her into a death realm and then into Hell itself.
Because of the events at the end of Jennifer Ashley’s previous Immortals book, The Gathering, Mac, who is essentially a creature of light, is struggling with a dark side of himself for the first time in the 700 years he’s been alive. I was fascinated by the notion that Mac, a creature of light, must recognize, embrace, and conquer his unexpected dark side in order to save those he loves.
May: The Immortals series are the collaboration of 3 authors, you, Jennifer Ashley, and Robin T. Popp. Usually I do not like a series with several authors because I always feel the disconnection between each book but not with this series. How hard it is for you to work on a series with other author?
Joy: It was a definite challenge! Jennifer Ashley pitched the original idea for Immortals to Dorchester. Dorchester was looking for a multi-author series idea to follow their previous Crimson City and 2176 multi-author series, and decided Immortals would be perfect. Robin and I were approached by Dorchester to collaborate with Jennifer on the series.
Writing connected books with two fantastically talented authors was a wild experience. I didn't know Robin or Jennifer before the project started, and I'm so glad to have them as friends now. Jennifer was a very wise group facilitator and so easy to work with, as was Robin. We generated some amazing creative energy with the Immortals series. We had to work very closely together via email on worldbuilding for the Immortals world, and spent quite some time brainstorming about the rules of magic, and our characters’ history and talents. We wanted to be sure we complemented each other, and that each book brought a unique twist to the series. For the first four books, we were working on a common story timeline, and with a common villain, so it was at time crazy keeping everything straight. I huge thanks goes to our editor for keeping an eagle eye on the continuity aspects of the series.
Often people new to the series asks if the books have to be read in order. If you're interested in reading the first four Immortals books, which were released in 2007, you should read The Calling by Jennifer Ashley first. The second and third books, The Darkening by Robin Popp, and my own book The Awakening take place simultaneously in the overall Immortals timeline, so either could be read first after The Calling. While each of the books has a satisfying resolution its romance and conflict, the fourth book, The Gathering by Jennifer Ashley, is a resolution of the overall four book story arc.
In contrast, the Immortals books coming out this fall - The Redeeming by Jennifer Ashley, The Crossing by Joy Nash, and The Haunting by Robin T. Popp, are all stand-alone titles, and can be read in any order. While they're set in the same Immortals world, you don't have to read the first four books in the series to understand what's going on in each book. An anthology, The Reckoning, containing stories from all three Immortals authors will be out in March 09.
May: Apart from the Immortals series, you have another series, which is the favorite of mine. So could you tell the reader about the Druids of Avalon? I really want this one to become huge.
Joy: I’m glad you asked, because I love the Druids of Avalon series, too! The Druids of Avalon series is a historical fantasy romance series set in Britain that follows the Celtic and Roman ancestors of King Arthur. The series grew out of my first book with Dorchester, Celtic Fire (Jun 05), a paranormal tale of a Celtic Queen and a Roman army commander who is led to her northern British tribe by his dead brother’s ghost. The younger brother of Rhiannon, the heroine of Celtic Fire is Owein. Thirteen years after the events of Celtic Fire, Owein is an embittered Druid warrior living in the mountains of South Wales, when he becomes the hero of The Grail King (Aug 06), the first book in the Druids of Avalon series, and the winner of a Reviewers’ Choice Award from Romantic Times.
While The Grail King features a pre-Arthurian hunt for the Holy Grail, in the second book in the Druid series, Deep Magic (Jan 08), readers learn my version of how the legendary sword Excalibur was forged. The series continues in 2009 with Silver Silence, a story that delves into the legend surrounding King Arthur’s birth. I hope that there will be many more books in this series as my characters follow Arthurian legend through time!
May: The last question. I always want to know beyond the newest book. Could you tell me about the book you are working on right now?
Joy: 2009 will find me launching a new contemporary romance series. A Little Light Magic will be out in June 09. Set set at the New Jersey Shore, A Little Light Magic, as the title implies, is lighter in tone and magic than either my Immortals or Druids books – but the emotional and romantic elements are just as strong!
