My Favorite Hero

This blog is part of the contest offered by Nalini Singh over at her website. Love her idea of talking about romance heroes, should have thought about it myself since I always love to talk about heroes.

For me, the heroes drive the story. To say without guilty, I usually pay more attention for heroes than heroines and be more forgivable to them than ever offered to the heroines. And to select only a handful of heroes is very difficult and trying process but of course for a prize offered by NS, I will try.

When first thinking about romance heroes, the name "Archer Donovan" is the first thing appeared in my brain. I loved him for his love for Hannah in "Pearl cove" written by Elizabeth Lowell. The scene when he got telephone from Hannah notified him about her husband/his brother's death and she mentioned that she is so tried. He left everything and flew from the US to Australia to be with her is so romantic without any sappy moment. It just showed how much his love for her even though they did not meet in person for many years.

And to write about heroes without mention "Roarke" would be a crime. Do I need to say more about this guy? He is the richest man in world (of J.D. Robb's futuristic) but that does not matter at all when compare to the caring, loving, supporting, and many more _ing he give to his wife. I only I met the guy like that in my life.

Can you resist the arrogance of the high born lord? Combine them with the great responsibility of raising younger siblings, which make it into 4 - 5 books series, you would get great, strong, and of course arrogance heroes. I, for one, cannot resist. It is hard to select among those great oldest brother heroes. I come up with "Marquess of Rothgar" from Devilish by Jo Beverley. He is the blueprint of those kind of series. I loved him so much that I can read his dressing scene (at the beginning of Devilish) and find it to be very tantalizing.

Another type of heroes that I cannot resist is the honorable one. The recent name came up to my memories is "Hayden Rothwell" from The Rule of Seduction by Madeline Hunter. Many people would say he is too idiot not to say the truth and clear any misunderstand between him and the heroine. I always think the truth would be the good way out any situation but for once, I agree with Hayden. He promised the heroine's cousin not to tell the truth without knowing that his fate will be entwined with her. If he knew, Hayden would not make a promise but since he already gave his word, he had to suffer in silence.

How could you not love "Bobby Tom Denton" from Heaven, Texas by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. The southern accent already won half my heart and the southern manner won the rest. He is a little bit thinking too much of himself but he already got this comeuppance from the heroine at the end of the book

On the dark side I do not always love the loving & caring hero. Some of my favorite heroes came from my worst nightmare. "Dexter Morgan" is the best example. He fascinated me so much. He is a serial killer without any conscience but in the end he sacrificed one person who understood him for the sister he denied that he did not love. How could you top that?

What about "Clayton Denvers" the hero from Kelley Armstrong's Bitten, Stolen, and Broken. He is a psychopath, a lunatic who does not understand the phase that "love is to sacrifice". For him the wolf's instinct always ruled him. To love is to own. His logic is simple. He want Elena, want her to be like him so he bit her and make her became a werewolf. That is not love I would like to find in my real lift but it is fun to read.

The last would be "Peter Jensen" from Cold as ice by Anne Stuart. I love when his control vanished and let himself feel. All Anne Stuart's heroes are like this. Beginning as tough & cold-hearted but love transformed them. Not that to the degree of Tom Hank in "Sleepless in Seattle" but more of Jack Nicholson in "As good as it get". Just the best they can be because of the heroines.

I can go on forever but it is too long already.

Finally I would to make a point to introduce you to Nalini Singh. If you follow my blog, you would already read my review of her books. It is a great series, very imaginative, innovation, and different from other paranormal series in the market.

Her new books will be released next month (February 2008) but if you lived in Thailand you should get this book with in next week because it is coming into Bookweb.
